Automotive Insurance for Students

New drivers will always pay higher premiums than experienced drivers when it comes to automobile insurance. The reason is the new drivers are often a greater risk on the road due to lack of experience. This is not intended to penalize new drivers. However, statistics show there are higher chances of accidents when a new driver is involved. That being said, new drivers that are students in high school or college may find discounts from being a student or taking certain classes.

General Information

At the age of fifteen, a North Carolina resident may apply for a driver’s license. This is a graduated license. The first level is a learner’s permit in which the driver may drive a vehicle with a supervising driver who is over the age of eighteen and a legal guardian. Once this period is complete, the driver can obtain a limited provisional license wherein the driver can drive unsupervised from 5 am to 9 pm when driving to work, school or volunteer service. The driver must have had a learner’s permit for at least twelve months, passed a road test and have proof of liability insurance. Finally, after the provisional license has been maintained for six months or more without any violation, the driver may receive a non-provisional license without any restrictions. However, any student under eighteen years of age must stay in school, or his or her license will be revoked.

Insurance Discounts

Students are afforded several opportunities for insurance discounts to help keep their automobile insurance on the more affordable side. First, taking a behind-the-wheel driving class and doing well may result in an instant discount. Another opportunity to save money may come from maintaining an overall “A” or “B” average in school. This shows insurers that you are conscientious, which usually translates to being a better driver.

Aside from these student related discounts, sharing the vehicle with your student driver, as opposed to providing the driver with his or her own vehicle, will reduce overall costs. Additionally, the type of vehicle your student drives can contribute to the cost of the insurance, so it is always a good idea to avoid sports cars and SUV’s.
