Pros and Cons: Travel Trailer or Motor Home?

Thursday, May 31, 2018

Traveling is one of the greatest joys in life. Driving the open road across the United States allows you to experience life in a way that most people only read about; taking in the beauty of the landscape that makes up these amazing United States. Some people chose this as a way of life; working jobs that allow them to live the life of a nomad. Others may enjoy a summer vacation on the road, parking, and camping throughout the journey. Still, others may choose to live retirement on the open road and travel from place to place, visiting exciting landmarks and family along the way. The good news is there are options, depending on your point in life. You can choose to utilize a travel trailer or a motorhome. The hard part is deciding what is a good option for you.

The Pros and Cons of a Travel Trailer

One option is to hitch a travel trailer to the back of your truck and drive to your destination. This method offers a lot of benefits for any traveler. First, the unit simply attaches to your truck and provides a home away from home to allow you to make camp anywhere you wish to travel. At the same time, you can detach the trailer and drive your truck around town to take in the sights outside of your campground with ease.

The cost to insure a travel trailer is relatively inexpensive, making the purchase even more appealing to many travelers. Much of the insurance will cover the loss of items within the trailer, as well as liability if an accident were to occur within your trailer when it is being utilized as your place of residence, even while on vacation. It is important to consider the state in which your travel trailer is registered to determine the issues which may need to be insured and the type of coverage required, however, most states consider the nature of a travel trailer to be more recreational than permanent and adjust insurance costs accordingly.

Of course, while travel trailers are seemingly an excellent addition to the road warrior type of traveler, there are several negative aspects of ownership as well. First, travel trailers tend to be a bit more compact than other mobile home options. Space can be cramped for even the closest of families. Also, a travel trailer is separate from the vehicle. Therefore, passengers cannot enjoy the comforts of home while on the road and are still subject to remaining in the cab of the truck while the vehicle is in motion, no matter the length of the road trip. For these reasons, it may be a good option to consider a Motorhome as another option for traveling the open road.

The Pros and Cons of a Motorhome

While a travel trailer may seem like a nice compromise for the driven traveler, a motorhome offers several luxuries of home while on the open road. A Motorhome is an all-inclusive unit that includes the cab for driving, as well as all the amenities of the home directly behind the cab for a comfortable, almost luxurious driving experience.

The pros of a Motorhome are wondrous. First, the Motorhome offers much of the comforts of home while away from home. Some people have found that a Motorhome can become an excellent retirement home, in which they can leave behind the standard expenses of living and travel the US at a moment’s notice. They can take in the beautiful sights that make up this great Country or visit family and friends all over the country without needing the extra amenities, such as a place to stay. Furthermore, depending on the size of the Motorhome, a large group of people can travel together while remaining comfortable and having a place to sleep and eat while on the road.

While a Motorhome may be a bit less costly to insure than a stationary home, it can still be a bit costly, compared to a travel trailer, especially if is to be used as a permanent type of residence. Also, a Motorhome is a large vehicle, making it difficult to maneuver when out and about in town, after a night of rest. Many times, you may choose to rent a smaller vehicle or even tow your smaller vehicle with you to explore towns while you are out vacationing since the Motorhome can be very difficult to maneuver.
