Form FS-1
Monday, March 13, 2017
If you are a driver in North Carolina, you have likely heard of an FS-1 form. This form is only used in North Carolina, and it is the equivalent of a certificate of insurance in other states. This form will indicate that you carry the minimum coverage required by law in North Carolina and above.
Its Uses
The FS-1 Form is used to show that you have coverage when driving your vehicle. It is needed to register a vehicle with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. It must also be used if you are in a car accident or go through an inspection to show your vehicle is properly insured under the requirements of the law.
This form can take the place of what’s called a self-certification, in which the insured supplied the name of the insurance company, his or her policy number, and its telephone number to verify the policy. It is issued by a company that is licensed to conduct insurance business in North Carolina. Furthermore, it cannot be used if a policy has been cancelled or has not been renewed, as the law requires the insurance company to notify the Department of Transportation when a cancellation occurs.
The Necessary Coverages
In order to legally obtain an FS-1 Form, the driver must maintain specific coverages, at a minimum, as required by North Carolina law. These coverages include $30,000 for bodily injury per person, $60,000 bodily injury per vehicle and $25,000 for property damage. The same amounts of coverages, written at 30/60/25 are required for uninsured motorist coverage under the law. Obviously, if your policy goes above and beyond the minimum standard of coverage, the FS-1 will also be issued.
